Project 01 PDF

For the project in term 1, we got given three variables by rolling a dice; my client was a political/elected party, the message I had to communicate was to help others and the audience I had to aim it at was inner city 15-20 year olds. Below is the first PDF I have made which shows the research I did on these three variables, and the ideas I had; using a range of different formats to communicate the message of helping others. Not only was this the first PDF I'd made but it was also the first time I'd properly used Adobe InDesign, which made it a challenging but fun project. I was able to share this PDF with you by using this website: http://issuu.com/.

I am planning on putting more work into this piece of work for when it gets resubmitted for further marking. I will post it up again in the spring/summer seasons of the year to show the development I'll have made to it and also to show how my computer and design skills have improved during the course.

The 2009 E Sting challenge

Every year E4 challenges us to do something rather special by making an on-air sting for them. The 1st Prize winner receives a cheque for £5000 and two runners up each receive £500. The finalists also get invited to attend an awards ceremony in London where the final winner gets announced. E4 already chose their 2009 winner but I had a look through the 15 finalists and disagreed with them on which video was the best. I've picked my favourite 2009 E4 ident and displayed it below, its called 'The e4 Machine' and was done by Gareth Sayers.

BBC2 idents

BBC television idents began in the early 1950s, when the BBC first displayed a logo between programmes to identify its service. As new technology has become available, these devices have evolved from simple still black and white images to the sophisticated full colour short films seen today. With the arrival of digital services in the United Kingdom, and with them many more new channels, branding is perceived by broadcasters to be much more important, meaning that idents need to stand out from the competition. Below are a couple of cool videos I found on YouTube of BBC2 idents throughout the ages, I like the soundtracks to them both, but there's so many songs to choose from, that I'd like to experiment with different choices.

St Brides Library

Last term my group from class went to St Brides Library on Fleet Street. St Brides Library started in 1891 and has around 50,000 books on printing. It was fun and very interesting finding out all the history of paper. Nigel Roche, Head Librarian and a specialist in subject of typography, conducted a one hour lecture and told us some very interesting facts. Do you know... who invented paper? when paper was first made by machine? what the future to printing is? Answers at the end of this post. After taking in a ton of information we got given a tour of the libraries extensive resources, I only took a few photographs during the tour and I have included scans of some notes I made in the lecture.

Sky Logo

I've always liked Sky's logos, but their latest one is my favourite with its glass effect. After a few searches on Google I found a site which is good at explaining a very simple and straightforward way of creating Sky's latest logo. Check out the link at the bottom, and give it a try creating the Sky logo in just a few simple steps using Photoshop.

What the PlayStation Logo Could Have Been

The PlayStation brand turned 15 years old recently, along with the brand's iconic "PS" logo. I'm definitely part of the "PlayStation Generation", I remember when I got my PlayStation, it was something that was on all boys Christmas lists. My interest into this at the the time were not from the design aspects. The PlayStation logo was designed by Manabu Sakamoto, who also designed the logo for Sony's VAIO computer products. At that time I was unaware that the logo that was on my PlayStation console wasn't the original concept for PlayStation. Would the PlayStation legacy be different if it used a different logo?

LOGORAMA

I love this video! the idea is what I love the most about it, a logo world. When you think about it, its actually not that different from our world, when we walk through the streets we're actually surrounded by logos. Another reason I like this video so much is probably because I am a big fan of logos, and logo design is the area of design I am thinking of going into. 'LOGORAMA' is a short film that was directed by the French animation collective H5, François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy and Ludovic Houplain and was produced by Autour de Minuit. It was presented at the Cannes Film Festival 2009. The film shows events in a stylized Los Angeles, and is told entirely through the use of more than 2,500 contemporary and historical logos and mascots. It opened the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and won an Academy Award under the category of Best Animated Short Film.
